Sad Demise of Lt Col TS Mann

On 12 Apr morning when I opened my mail I found a note from Manmohan singh informing me about the passing away of  Lt Col TS Mann  in the morning. It was shock for me to hear this news.Though he was not keeping good health for sometime but I was sure that the fighting spirit that Mann had , he will certainly come out of it . Alas that was not to be.He has a special place in our heart as he was my first senior sublt in 41 and we have commanded our Troops together in A Sqn. Later he became my Sqn Cdr and I was his 2IC. There are many moments which I cherish but that part later. He was cremated on 13 Apr 10.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to  Mrs Mann and the girls Natasha and Rubi at this difficult moment of their life .May god give them strength to overcome the pain caused by the tragedy.

Raising day

It was a great fun attending raising day. Brig & Mrs  JP,  Lt Col & Mrs Jai, Lt col & Mrs  Shrigaonker,  Sexy sir & Mrs Saxena, Pat Sir & Mrs Pat along with chahat, Sandhu, parveen, Jiten Chauhan, Thakur, Suri , Sharad mohan self along with Leela and Cherie attended the function . KVK Prakash also came for a small time as he was passing through.

It was really fun to know young officers , ladies and the kids of the Regt. They all left no stone unturned to look after us. hats off to Vinay and his team. Shalini, Navdeep and other ladies of the unit were also full of josh . Bhullar, Ajai, Alok, Surinder Palia, Chawla and other youngsters worked really hard to make the event a grand success.They went out of their way to make us feel at home.Overall I can say with confidence that all the old officers of the Regt enjoyed thoroughly. We all also revived our old memories of the unit. Pat sir was in his elements as usual. Brig Saxena has'nt lost his old midas touch. Col Sherry's old songs were a treat to hear.Col Jai singh of course was not so well and we missed his rustic humor.

Lots of old jawans attended the function . almost all of  Jammu brigade was there, I mean guys from jammu.

EQUIVALENCE OF STATUS BETWEEN MILITARY RANKS AND CIVIL APPOINTMENTS ON THE BASIS OF WARRANT OF PRECEDENCE AS ON DATE

Irrespective of the pay equivalence, the President’s Secretariat vide notification No 33/Pres-79 dated 26 July 1979 (Amended upto Oct 2008) has laid down the status of military and civil appointments till Maj Gen / Jt Secy to Govt of India for official functions. The layout of the same is as follows :

Cabinet Secretary (Article 11) – Chiefs of Services (Article 12) – Army Commanders / Vice Chiefs / Secretaries to Govt of India / Chief Secretaries within their States (Article 23) – Lt Generals (Article 24) – Addl Secretaries to Govt of India / Chief Secretaries outside their States / DGs of CPOs / Director IB (Article 25) – Major Generals / Joint Secretaries to Govt of India (Article 26)

*Note on Appointments in the Indian Police Service : The Distt police in charge is known by variable nomenclature in different States. For example, irrespective of Grade, the said officer is known as SSP in Punjab & UP but SP in Haryana and DCP in Metros. A Selection Grade IPS officer is also sometimes referred to as SSP.  JAG Officer posted in Police HQrs is known as AIG.

*Officers of the rank of DIG, IGP, Addl DGP and DGP are only equated with their respective counterparts of the Army if selected to hold these appointments through Central empanelment under Govt of India. For example, there may be an officer holding the appointment of DGP in a State but when the same officer is posted at the centre in a CPO, he/she may be placed two steps lower as an IGP. An officer of the rank of DGP is placed as Special Secretary to Govt of India if posted on a Secretarial appointment as are other HAG+ officers.

Netting with some Old folks

I have not written for long as there was no news to give about the 41 folks. No one is contributing. I was a bit disappointed that in spite of my cajoling and requesting many regimental officers none came forward. I spoke to Bhatta sir and got news about him. After his posting to Bhadrak, Orissa in a NCC Bn, he is now posted at Fort William Calcutta. He is in ECHS. Seems he is getting ready for his retirement. He is retiring in Apr 2013.  Magna his daughter has completed her graduation and now keen to pursue her post graduation in Management. She is a bright girl as far as I know her. Next I spoke to Capt Vikram Rawat : He is in Nawi  Mumbai. He is fine with his wife. Both, I am told, are employed with State Bank Of India. Mrs Rawat is a doctor by profession.  His Mob No is 09867568252

Later I also got a call from Col Ravi Saigol. It was pleasant surprise to hear from him after long long time. He is settled in D’Dun and it seems enjoying his meditation sessions. Daughter Ruperna (Pontu) has gone to UK to pursue post graduation in Economics. She has done her graduation in Economics from LSR Delhi, though she was a science student in her school. I remember she was a good friend of Ruchika when they were in 2nd or 3rd class at Pathankot. Later Col Saigol took PMR and I moved to Delta force so even the kids could not meet.  Col Ravi Saigol’s Mob No is 09719077805

I am in touch with Sainna Narla . His elder son Maanas  is inclined to join Army. It is really good. We have quite a few second generation officers, though all are not in 41 but they are doing proud to their parents.

Though officers posted around the capital may be aware of this, the ADG Adm and Coord in a progressively out of the box solution, has tied up with the Taj on Sardar Patel Marg for accommodation for Lieutenant Colonels and above. Lt Cols to Brigs can stay @ Rs 3000/- per night which is within the official entitlement and which would include :

This has already been circulated vide a letter issued on 15 August 2009. The arrangement as of now is institutional and only for the zamini fauj but I think on a personal level the other services and ranks can follow suit as long as they meet the entitlement criterion of the govt. Before naysayers jump to any conclusion, the reason why ranks below Lt Cols have not been included is that rates below Rs 3000 per night are not viable to the Taj group.

Sad News

Col JS Chauhan and Col Sarad Awasthi lost their mothers on 26th and 28th Aug . We offer our heartfelt condolences to both the offrs and their families. While I had not met the mother of Col Awathi’s we had known chauhan’s mother since long. I had seen her taking evening walks in TCP colony in Pathankot. She was a very religious woman. She used to live with chow, wherever he went on posting. I recently met her in lucknow in Apr this year. She had become very frail and lost her memory as well as vocal cords. She could not recognize anyone.
Here I would like to add a word about Mrs Rekha Chauhan. In spite of failing health of her mother- in -law, who required constant looking after, Mrs chauhan never looked perturbed and sincerely looked after her. Hats Off to her , it only shows her good family background and the upbringing.
Once again Leela and I offer our condolences to both the families.

Upadate on reshuffle of Offrs and Kids

Yesterday I got a call from Sanjay Thakur . He was in high spirits(post6 PC). he was speaking from Bombay where he is posted now. He has got accn in Colaba. Karisma has joined Hotel Management in Bombay after getting 90% marks in 12 class. He seemed very happy with his new posting.His house is in 6 floor and sea beach is visible from the terrace.It seems we all need to go to bombay t do the 'adm insp' of Thakur

Rubi, Col TS Mann's younger dughter is also going to Sydney for doing her MBA from univ of sydney , one of the top uni of australia. she will be leaving this month. Mrs Mann informed me on tele.

Our own sherry (Sharad Mohan ) is firmly planted in Delhi/Noida. It seems he finally have got some work to do.what with 1200 tanks under him for maintainence.but knowing sherry I can say he will overcome these minor hurdles and mov on in high spirits. By the way he was the first one to inform me on 29 May that we have received our 6 PC arrears in this months pay slip. thanks for that as otherwise i was about to take a loan to ward of some sudden requirement.

Bountia and vivek have reached kanpur on their new posting. Their daughter Shreya has passed her 10 board with flying colors. looking forward to meeting them .

Silky , JS Chauhan's elder daughter has joined symbiosis at pune for MBA ,good luck to her. Baby is planning to crack IIT JEE this year. Knowing her I am 100% sure she will achieve it this year. In the meanwhile Chow and all other officers whose kids are getting getting good marks in exams are hiding there own school mark-sheet from their kids.( you know why)

General News

I have come to Gwalior with Leela and Cherie, bag and baggage. I plan to stay here for next two years. I was pleasently surprised to get a call from Mrs T S Mann .She is fine and settled at chandigarh with our orignal cowboy Col TS Mann.Rubi , the younger one is planning to go to Sydney for higher studies, MBA from Sydney University. Ruchika for one is very happy. After all they are not only good friends but class mates of Nursery class. Pontu (Ravi Saigol's doughter has gone to UK for post graduation)All the girls of 41 who appeared in the board exams of this year did well and scored above 90% . They are:-
1.Karisma Thakur.(Sanjay Thakur has since hidden his mark sheet of 12 cl)
2.Apaksha Chauhan (Baby for us) .Choski's younger one.She is aspiring to be an Engineer.
3.Cherie. My younger one.
Vivek'S son & Naru's son have also appeared in the board exams but I am not aware of their results. I have E Mailed them to find out.
Meanwhile one of our youngster Earth Kukreti has got married in Dehra dun. He is presently posted in lucknow. we wish him and his wife happy married life.
Our Mugal-a-Asam brig Saxena has also found a soul mate and tied the knot. we wish him good luck and happy second innings.

Government Notifies PB-4 Pay for Lieutenant Colonels

After a seven-month-long fight demanding pay parity with their civilian counterparts, over 15,000 officers of the armed forces will take home enhanced salaries from this month.

The armed forces headquarters on Tuesday notified amended orders to place the 15,000 Army Lieutenant Colonels, IAF Wing Commanders and Navy Commanders under Pay Band-4 of the Sixth Pay Commission.

However, these officers, who form the backbone of the armed forces’ fighting units, are not “entirely” happy with the notification, citing the lower Grade Pay of Rs 8,000 accorded to them compared to Rs 8,400 to their civilian counterparts under the new pay commission that came into effect on September 1 last year.

“The amended notification for placing Lt Cols and equivalents in Pay Band-4 of the Sixth Pay Commission has been issued today,” sources in the tri-services headquarters said in New Delhi.

“We are not entirely happy with it, as the parity in grade pay with our civilian services counterparts is not been met, though our long wait for enhanced pay is now over,” a Lt Col-rank officer in the Services headquarters in New Delhi told PTI.

But, the several lakhs of jawans, who form the fighting force, are still awaiting the notification for restoration of 70 per cent pensionary weightage, a Sixth Pay Commission anomaly that all sections of the government agreed was fully justified.

Shivi's Marriage on 14 Apr

As I said earlier, we all were there for Shivi's marriage and the added attraction was reviving of old memories with all ,specially Chow. Chow's home was the Ops as well as adm HQ. I grabbed his master bed room and he was forced to sleep in the drawing room. His mother has become frail. She can barely talk, which only Chow and Mrs Chow can understand. Hats off to them .They really look after her.

As regards to Shivi's marriage, it was a grand affair. It was in the SOI of central comd. our old Doc Nishal was also there as he had come for some conference to Lucknow. We all broke of late at night. Col Awasthi for once was looking a little tired and also releived at the same time.

In this whole event children had lots of fun . Silky,Baby, Jasman Cherie and Amu. Gulgul (col Awasthi's son) of course was busy with the marriage .He is a nice boy and studying at AIT Pune.
Ladies have also exchanged notes about each others city's shopping attraction and all of them are planning to visit each other.Good for us we can also have our boozing sessions.

A mini get together of 41 at Lucknow

Few old 41 Offrs got together at lucknow on 13 and 14 Apr 09. The Occasion is the marriage of our little 'Shivi' the daughter of Col Sharad Awasthi at Surya offrs institute of Central Comd. The following attended the marriage and enjoyed the hospitality's of Col Awasthi duly supported by Chow.

4. Lt Col & Mrs Ram Pal Parasher and Amu.(drove down from Jhansi)
5. Maj Earth Kukreti who is posted in 41 Inf Bde here at lucknow.
6. Of course myself along with Leela and the younger one Cherie.

I drove from Gwalior and I can tell you driving a Non AC maruti 800 in summers, reminded me of my days in unit when we used to drive tank in ex. I think next time I will not be so adventures.
Here in Lucknow I occupied Chow's master bed room and drove him out to drawing room.
Others had to contend with various guest rooms.Yesterday was the party for all guests and today (14 Apr) is the marriage. I tell you it was really fun meeting the friends again. Col & Mrs Awasthi and Chow really looked after all of us. Chow's famous hospitality is still in place so after the party we all in 'tun' condition had to suffer that hospitality of Chow. He opened red label for us and the day ended only at 2.00 in the night. Today there was lunch at Chow's house for all 41 offrs and we had another round of booze. now I will close and tell you more later as we all are getting ready for the marriage.

Here is the brief of the station:-

DD's had come to Secunderabad on pre retirement LTC trip with Mrs DD Sharma & the daughter. Col DD’s health has improved but he is as jolly as ever. They had a get together Katoch and Col and Mrs Noor Mohd. Naru met him next day and Lu was too busy moving in & out of the station.

Maj Alok Srivastava is on Pre staff here. He has turned Veggie (says a voice came from within). Saala agle janam main deserves to be grass eating species. Saving grace is that he still drinks like seasoned 41st. His wife is a fauji from Engrs. She is presently posted in Pune. It is an internet marriage. She joined him on 16 Mar upto 21 mar.

Naru,s son Manas doing Engr. Younger one Shreyas busy studying and Mrs Narla is teaching.

Lu - Turned fatso. Daughter is in 12th and brilliant in studies. Son keeps him on the toes. Begum being kept on toes by trio. He is the national head of a MNC called CSC. He is usually out of town five days a week. Recession has done some good by cutting down some of his trips.

Col SN Mohd is his usual self. He is now waiting to hang his spurs( final Al Vida from fauj) in Apr. daughter Ruhi is with TCS at Chennai after doing her MBA. Son Riyaz married in Feb . The girl is from Lucknow. All 41 guys in station attended his marriage.

In last one year station was visited by Suri ( Col SS Mahal) twice (both time to CDM), Capt Vineet Saurabh and Brig Vijay Saxena.

I am keeping my vision very clear duly assisted by daily dose of medication. We plan to stay for a year plus till Mithu finally decides his future either way. Mithu is presently in 12 class.

Another surprise connection we got is from Mrs Vivek (Bountia) from Chennai . U can see her comment in the blog . She wrote :-

Yesterday I got a call from sanjay Thakur who is in Rangia as AAG . He is now posted to Embarkation HQ at Mumbai and is to move by Jun 09. He is planning to take the family. Karisma has just finished her 12 class and keen to pursue Hotel managment.

Manmohan is in Ambala and on study leave he really seems to be enjoying.

Col Sharad Awasthi's Daughter Shivi is getting married on 13 Apr at Lucknow. I am going along with Leela and Cherie. Cherie has just finished her cl 10 Board and needs a break.

I also heard that Col TS Mann's elder Daughter Natasha got married on 14 Feb at chandigarh.

I have since sent him the details and hope that we will remain in touch .Col Shirgaonkar as I remember him is a fun loving offr, eveready to go for movie at Dharam place at Suratgarh. Under his leadership, we as youngsters in suratgarh have seen many a hit /flop movies. I am sure he is still the same fun loving person .wish to see and hear more of him and the family.

The other day I told Sherry to see the blog. well Sherry (motivated that he is ) went on to the mission of seeing the blog on the net in the evening after two down and third in hand . He simultaneously gave me a call on tele while sitting in front of the net. He sent me a mail and told me to send back the link to him in mail. I did so promptly,while both of us were also on tele(in case..... ). Sherry tried his best to open the mail , failing to do so the services of Kanica ( his daughter) were requisitioned (Sherry kept informing me about the progress on tele .... in which he is good at) . Kenica did open the mail and told sherry how to open the link . before I could know, whether Sherry finally saw the blog we got cut and could not reconnect again due to lack of signals . He hasn't called me back as yet ,so it seems the red over green (the success signal) has not been fired as yet. But what the hell the effort was complete . Three cheers to that.
